Wine of the Month Penfolds Bin 707 Cabernet Sauvignon 2001
First bottled in 1964, the wine was not produced from 1970 to 1975, nor in 1981, 1995, or 2000, because the fruit was deemed to be of insufficient quality. The 2001 vintage is wonderful. Possessing a rich dark color, wonderful aroma, and dense flavors, this blend will age beautifully. The wine should be selling for about $80 per bottle.
Hidden gem:
Limited release of 100 in the United States
Vargells Vinha Velha – 80 year old vines produce intense, tannin heavy grapes with the flavor of black cherry, peppery currant, and plum that are normally utilized for blending. This fall Taylor-Fladgate will release a set of three single-quinta vintage ports. Vintages from 1995, 1997, and 2000 are three of the notable years in recent decades. Currently the suggested retail pricing, if you can find any, is scheduled to be $900 per case.
